Network Connect error nc.windows.app.23711 after i

Summary:

Some third party applications can interfere with Network Connect.  Bonjour (a zero-configuration networking application) uses mDNSResponder (a Bonjour system service) that modifies the route table and will trigger the nc.windows.app.23711 Network Connect error.

Problem or Goal:

Symptoms & Errors:

  • The Network Connect client disconnected from the secure gateway because the client’s routing table was altered.
  • Installing a version of Flash CS3 or iTunes has caused users to become unable to connect to the VPN.
  • Network Connect would connect briefly and then pop up an alert saying:
System Log Message: The Network Connect session terminated. Do you want to reconnect? (nc.windows.app.23711).
  • Early versions of CS3 and the Bonjour service after being installed started causing the problem.
Solution:

Upgrade to Bonjour version 1.06 or higher.

Workarounds

Option 1:

Bonjour modifies the route table after Network Connect launches so you can’t use the disable split tunneling option with it.   Use “allow access to local subnet” option or one of the enable "split tunneling" options

Option 2:
Select Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at the processes.  After installing Flash CS3, the “mDNSResponder.exe” service should be listed.  Ending this process allows you to connect through Network Connect.

Note: This process will need to be stopped every time the computer is restarted as the process is automatically started with the system.

Option 3:
Alternatively, stop the service which starts the mDNSResponder process.

  1. Go to Start Menu > Run and type in “services.msc” to open the services configuration panel.
  2. Look for a service with a name similar to ”##Id_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_  5BB94B879762 ##” (Note: the information after String. may change on each computer).
  3. To confirm it’s the correct service double click on it and look at the “Path to executable” – it should be  “C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe”. If it is, then change the “Startup type” to “disabled” and press the “Stop” button.
  4. Should now be able to connect to the VPN.

What is Bonjour?

Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.

Specifically, Bonjour enables automatic IP address assignment without a DHCP server, name to address translation without a DNS server, and service discovery without a directory server. Bonjour is an open protocol which Apple has submitted to the IETF as part of the ongoing standards-creation process.

To learn more, check out the Bonjour Protocol Specifications which details the technologies that make up Link-Local and Wide-Area Bonjour.

What is mDNSResponder?

mDNSResponder is a Bonjour system service that implements Multicast DNS Service Discovery for discovery of services on the local network, and Unicast DNS Service Discovery for discovery of services anywhere in the world. mDNSResponder is built into Mac OS X and can be downloaded as part of Bonjour for Windows.

Applications like iTunes, iPhoto, iChat and Safari use mDNSResponder to implement zero-configuration network music sharing, photo sharing, chatting and file sharing, and discovery of remote user interfaces for hardware devices like printers and web cameras. mDNSResponder is also used to discover and print to Bonjour printers and USB printers connected to the AirPort Extreme and Express base stations. mDNSResponder is open source, and hardware device manufacturers are encouraged to embed the mDNSResponder source code directly into their products to benefit from zero-configuration networking.
